Governor Information for Parents / Gwybodaeth y Llywodraethwyr

The elected and appointed Governors have an increasingly important role to play in managing the school under recent Education Acts.   They are responsible for the smooth and efficient running of the establishment.  Governors can be parents, teachers, local council representative, community representatives or business people.  They have legal powers and responsibilities.  They act together not individually.  Strong links and cooperation between school staff, parents and Governor will in turn benefit the children of the school.

As required by law, the full Governing Body meets at least once every term and Minutes are published and are available from the School Office.

What is a governing body and what do they do?

Governors are responsible for overseeing the management side of a school: strategy, policy, budgeting and staffing. They enable their school to run as effectively as possible, working alongside senior leaders and supporting teachers to provide excellent education to children. Being a school governor is a commitment to attending governing body meetings which consider issues such as setting the school vision, mitigating financial risk and scrutinising educational outcomes. They are also involved in the school community, acting as critical friends to the headteacher and senior leaders.

How can parents/guardians contact the governing body?

Should you wish to get in contact with the Chair of the governing body, please contact the school office for further information.

How can you get involved?

The governing body of Llancaeach Junior School regularly seeks new nominations for community and parent governor vacancies. The Chair of governors would be delighted to speak to you about the role should you be interested and all vacancies will be advertised on our website here.  It is a great way to become involved with the school community and make a difference.

Comprehensive information about all types of school governor can be found at Governors for Schools - Effective Governors, Excellent Schools

Being a parent governor

Anyone who has a child at Llancaeach Junior School can nominate themselves to become a Parent Governor.  You do not need any specific skills, just an enthusiasm to help the school be the best it can be.  If more than 1 person volunteers per vacancy then a vote is undertaken to elect a governor.

As a parent governor you will have the opportunity to positively influence the way the school is governed, you can be involved with deciding how the budget is set, resourcing and staffing, and help decide and challenge the standards and targets that are set.  You will need to be able to attend regular governing body meetings (termly), there are also various committees and working groups which meet regularly, but you are not expected to be on every committee.  There are 2 mandatory training course provided by the local authority, now online, as well as other non-essential training to increase your knowledge in specific areas.

Being a governor is voluntary; it comes with responsibility, but allows you to have a positive impact in how the school is governed. It can be very rewarding when you see the school and children flourishing.

If you have any questions about becoming a parent governor, please contact the Chair of Governors Mrs Ann Gray or an existing Parent Governor who will be happy to chat about the role.
